Live a Life that Lasts

This week, a friend of a friend died.

He was young.  Some would say he had his whole life ahead of him.  But he didn't.   One day he woke up unresponsive, and the next he was gone.  No warning, no time to plan his last days.  He just left.

It didn't matter what he planned to do next week.  It didn't matter what achievements he wanted to reach.  Because it was all gone, a memory.  The only things that mattered were what he already did.

I don't often think of death.  The unknown is scary and dark.  I don't want to be a morbid person that always dwells in the bleak future.

But I think it's healthy to realize this:  we don't know if we have tomorrow.

The man who died thought he had time.  He probably had plans and dreams and hopes.  But they didn't matter.

Dear friends, make sure that your today counts.   Live in light of eternity.  Books, school, activities, life, nothing matters unless they're done for Him.  Live a life that lasts.

If you died tomorrow, would today matter?  Are you loving others and living for Christ?  Or do you let the days slip between your fingers?

This is a different post than most.  I wasn't planning on writing this, and I don't want to sound discouraging or dark.  Death, for Believers, is simply a step away from pain and into Jesus' presence.  It's a day of rejoicing because our mission is complete!  But as I remembered the short life we have, I wanted to remind you: eternity is all that matters.

I hope to restart our series on Project Love next week.   Until then, remember to be living for our Savior.  Live a life that lasts.

I'll end with a poem I wrote today.   I hope it inspires you to take a deeper look at life and seek to shine bright as daughters of the King.

Love,

    Hosanna

Only a Candle

The wick sinks low, silent flame quivers
one breath of air whispers through
and I am gone,
a memory.
no warmth, no light
continual stillness, life stolen by death.

What would my days have meant?
would someone miss me, shedding tears
longing for one last day together?
or would life go on,
birds still sing and sun still shine
life being lived without me?
another candle could be lit
to fill the void I left,
hours slipped between my fingers.

But as I rejoice in heaven
I hope that someone would sigh,
“this young girl drew me to Jesus’ arms,
and I have a reason to live.”

If only one heart was brightened
by the glow my fire had lit
it would be worth all
the pain, the tears
my life would have been well lived.

Yet still the sun is shining warm,
and birds sing in the trees
another day, a life to live
to laugh, to cling, to love.

A day is but a memory
‘til it becomes
something more.

    1. I wonder what it would be like if every Believer lived life in light of eternity? We wouldn't be afraid to witness, to speak up against sin, or to really live for Jesus. We would speak the truth in love and care about the people around us. Maybe unbelievers would come to repentance because of the love shining from our hearts.

It's sad how easily we lose sight. Every day matters. Thank you for taking the time to remind me of that. Coming here to respond to your comment made me remember - I need to be living for Jesus! You're a blessing to me, Rebekah. =)

    1. Yes, is so important to treasure each day remembering that it's a gift. I often find myself living for myself, forgetting that life has a deeper meaning. We can act mindlessly or with a set goal. But how can we keep an eternal mindset? That's a harder question to think about...

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Lilly. =)

  3. Thanks for this reminder... life is short. Eternity is what matters. We need to live our life with eternity in view. Thanks for this!

    1. So true, Sarah! Eternity is what matters.

I've been thinking about this a lot today. Some people claim that today is the "last day" (meaning the world will end or Jesus will come, I'm not sure which). I don't agree (see Matthew 24:36), but it made me think. What if today was the last day. Am I living in a way that would make Jesus smile? A way that would matter? Do my moments count for eternity?

We could die any day, and Jesus is coming when we least expect it. How important to live in that light, redeeming our time. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Sarah. =)

  4. Oh my goodness, Hosanna, such an amazing reminder!! This really touched me - I felt it HERE *places hand over heart*

My great-grandmother died a few months ago, and it was such a MOMENT because no one had ever died before my very eyes before, especially not someone so close. But it was a celebratory time as well as a sad time because she loved the Lord. I remember that as I watched her take her last breaths, I found comfort in the fact that at that very night, she entered through the gates of heaven. HEAVEN.

I want to live for that moment. Thanks again for this beautiful reminder! And that poem is so, so lovely :)

    1. Oh Lila! That's so beautiful! *hugs*

I've never experienced that moment, and I'm thankful for that. *sad smile* I can't imagine how bittersweet that would be. You lost a great-grandmother, but she gained everything. Isn't it wonderful that we, as Christians, don't need to fear death? It's not an eternal nothingness, but instead we gain entrance into our Savior's presence. ♥ A beautiful thought... To be free from pain, tears, sorrow, and be embraced by Him.

Yes, let's live for that moment and give Jesus our all! We'll never get to heaven wishing we had done less or been less radical. Yet I'm certain that most of us will look back and wonder, "why didn't we give more?" Let's give everything now while we have one more beautiful day to live.

  5. Beautiful reminder, Hosanna. And your poem was amazing. We really do need to keep this at the forefront of our minds- what a difference it makes in our lives when we do! <3

    1. Thank you, Emily! Living in light of eternity is difficult, but, when we do, what a difference it makes! Maybe that's what being a Christian is all about - having a different mindset than the rest of the world. Our lives should be all about Him, not us.

How to put that into practice every day? I'm still learning the answer to that. =) Emily, how do you strive to live a life completely focused on Jesus? I'm curious to hear your thoughts. =)

  6. Oh my, I seem to be coming face to face with this fact regularly. Just yesterday I heard of someone who died. I wouldn't say I knew him, but I'd met him a few times, and it's crazy to think that His life here is gone, over, finished, final. I can't have opportunity to talk to him about the gospel, or listen to his story, or give him a reason to smile. Sometimes it makes me question why?

But I know I need the reminder that we're mortal, fallible, transitory. It reminds me of James 4:14: For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Thanks for this Hosanna, and for listening to my rambles. My family knows death, and I guess it's a topic that hits a little hard, if that makes sense. xx

    1. I enjoy your rambles, Jessica. =) They're always so encouraging to read!

Ouch. And that person could be anyone. They could be stolen away in a second, and we would never have the chance to be there for them. What if this next meeting is all we have? What if we have only one more message, one more word? Is it enough? Silly how fear so often combats my will to speak up...because if this is life or death, what power does fear have anyway?

That verse speaks so clearly. We get so caught up in life...but it's a vapor. Here a moment, gone the next. It reminds me of Ecclesiastes. "All is vanity."

To tell the truth, I haven't experienced death in a personal way. (apart from losing Kalem, which seems very different) Hearing from those who have is powerful. How can we be redeeming the time? Treasuring each moment we have? Because so often I fail to do that. The topic does hit hard...

    1. Daily is an important word. =) I can have an eternal mindset for an hour or maybe a day...but every single moment? It's a constant struggle to think, love, and act as Jesus would. Living with an eternal mindset...

Feel free to print and frame the poem if that is helpful for you. =) Even though this is "my" poem, it really isn't. Every piece of inspiration is from Him. So use anything in whatever way brings you closer to Him. =) I'm thankful for your constant encouragement, Hannah. Keep living for Jesus, my friend!

  8. That is such a good reminder! Life can disappear in an instant, and our legacies--whether good or bad--will remain on earth. If we trust in Christ, we will be in heaven with Him.

    1. Legacy is a deep word, isn't it? I want to have a legacy that counts, that makes a difference. Even if we live and die without anyone remembering our name, it's lovely to know that He sees and knows all. What a wonderful day it will be when we can be with Him forever. ♥ Thank you for the encouraging words, Grace.

  9. WOWWWWW my friend. You're good at this poem-writing business. ;) Definitely puts our lives into perspective! That was beautiful. Seriously. It wasn't written in 'typical poem' format, and yet somehow it worked. It worked really well. <33
And I don't mind you deviating from Project Love posts. If you do so to post something like this, then deviate all you want. =)
Hosanna, you have made an impact on the blogging community and I am sure you have made an impact on everyone who is a non-virtual friend as well. You are such a godly influence, and you're a pretty cool person--keep fighting the good fight, my friend! <333

    1. Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed my untypical poem. =) I enjoy expressing myself through poetry, and I'm glad that God puts it into my heart. He's so wonderful!

I appreciate that! But you should be glad to know that I'm posting a "back to Project Love" post tomorrow. =) No more deviating for now...I need to go back to focusing on Love! I often forget how important it is, when it's really all that matters.

Thank you for your sweet encouragement, Ariel. You've been a blessing to me as well! ♥ Never forget how loved you are.

  10. I would be one to sigh... you've encouraged my heart towards Jesus many a time. But these are good questions for us to ask ourselves. May I and everyone who reads this or who has read it consider it as though written for me - or for them - not as though it was written for everyone else.

    1. Coming back here to respond, I had to read the poem over again. Odd how quickly I forget lessons like these. Living in light of eternity is hard! But yes - may we live remembering that each day is a precious gift from above and love Him in every moment. Friends like you help immensely, and I would also be one to sigh. Thank you, Jordy. ♥
